Media Release: Class action looms over 2011 flood release strategy

Media Release from Ipswich City Councillor Paul Tully

SEQ water bosses should be stripped of their "obscene" pay bonuses if they are found to have contributed to last year's disastrous Brisbane River flooding.

The call comes at the start of the Floods Commission renewed round of hearings following allegations the release of water from Wivenhoe Dam was seriously mismanaged.

Ipswich Councillor Paul Tully who lost his own home at Goodna during the flood said evidence was now emerging the dam release strategy was grossly flawed and that there had been a cover-up by dam bosses to conceal their negligence.

"If there are any adverse findings by the commission, heads must roll in SEQ Water."

Cr Tully predicted the largest class action in Australian history after the release of the inquiry's report.

"Thousands of home and business owners as well as insurance companies which paid out on the flood are set make billion dollar claims against the dam operators and the state government.

"If there had been major water releases from Wivenhoe Dam in the first ten days of January last year, a few rural bridges would have been inundated but Brisbane and Ipswich would have been largely saved," Cr Tully said
